My key won't turn in the ignition — what's causing it?
This is usually caused by a worn ignition barrel, a damaged key, or in some cases the steering lock engaging. It can also happen in cold weather when internal components stiffen. Call us and we’ll diagnose the cause before recommending a fix.
My key is stuck in the ignition and won't come out — can you help?
Yes. A key that won’t release is often a sign of a worn barrel or a fault with the gear selector or steering lock mechanism. We deal with this regularly. Call us and we’ll come to your location.
My key snapped inside the ignition — what do I do?
Don’t try to remove it yourself as this can push the broken piece further in and cause more damage. Call us straight away. We use specialist extraction tools to remove the broken key without damaging the barrel.
Can you repair the ignition barrel or does it always need replacing?
It depends on the extent of the wear or damage. In many cases we can repair the existing barrel, which is quicker and costs less. If the barrel is beyond repair, we carry replacements for most common vehicles and can fit one on the same visit.
Will I need a new key after the ignition barrel is replaced?
Usually yes. A new barrel typically comes with its own key, which will need to be programmed to your vehicle’s immobiliser. We handle the key programming as part of the service so you’re not left having to find someone else for that step.
How long does ignition barrel replacement take?
It varies by vehicle but most replacements are completed in one to two hours on site. We’ll give you a more specific estimate once you tell us your vehicle make and model.
Can a faulty ignition drain my car battery?
Yes, in some cases a partially engaged ignition can place a continuous load on the battery and drain it over time. If you’ve been having unexplained battery issues alongside ignition problems, both are worth mentioning when you call.
